Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue highlighted Kawhi Leonard’s career-high 55 points and defensive intensity as key factors in Sunday’s 112-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons at the Intuit Dome.
“Yes, sir,” Lue said when asked about leaving Kawhi in the game despite his 26-point third quarter. “Finally getting healthy, finally able to play enough minutes to be very, very effective.”
Lue credited the team’s defensive improvement to integration of new players and veteran leadership.
“Our new guys are figuring it out… Kawhi’s healthy, he’s able to fly around, create steals, and Brook has done a great job protecting the rim,” Lue said. “Our guards are getting into the basketball, our bigs are up, and rotations are flying around getting to the shooters.”
Nicolas Batum’s three-point shooting also drew praise from Lue after he made four in the first half.
“When the ball’s moving and hopping, everybody touches it and everybody gets shots,” Lue said. “Batum was the recipient of some of those open threes, and he knocked down four in the first half.”
Lue discussed how injuries early in the season affected team performance.
“Early on, injuries hurt us… Kawhi was on a minute restriction, everybody else playing 40 to 41 minutes,” he said. “Now with the restrictions off, he can play 38 to 40 minutes, which gives us a real chance every single night.”
Leonard also contributed 11 rebounds, helping fill the void left by Ivica Zubac.
“We talked to Kawhi and James about rebounding collectively… we missed 11 and a half rebounds from Zu, and our guys had to step up,” Lue said. “Overall, we did a good job handling that.”
Lue emphasized that the current four-game winning streak is built on a “next man up” mentality.
“When Kawhi’s playing at the elite level he’s at, we’re a different team,” Lue said. “Batum stepped in tonight for JC, Brook Lopez has been great, and that’s been our mentality all season: next man up.”
The coach also noted the importance of consistent defensive effort to sustain their momentum.
“Every single day in practice we continue to get better defensively,” Lue said. “Our rotations, pick-and-roll defense, and contesting shots are critical to winning these games.”
Lue concluded that health, defensive cohesion, and veteran contributions are central to maintaining the Clippers’ current form.
“When Kawhi’s healthy and our guys understand the formula offensively and defensively, we can compete with any team in this league,” Lue said.
