Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland spoke after his team fell 119-111 in overtime to the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday, December 14, highlighting key areas for improvement. “Played hard for a quarter, brought some energy for a quarter and lost the ball game,” Garland said.

Garland pointed to rebounding and communication as critical factors. “Rebounding the ball… talking on defense a little bit more,” he said. “Everybody got to come rebound and come help our bigs.” He emphasized that attention to detail and consistent energy could help the team reach the next level.

When asked about maintaining energy across all four quarters, Garland stressed readiness. “Be ready to play for 48 minutes,” he said, noting that sustaining intensity is vital for success.

Garland also addressed his personal health, declining to discuss his toe further. “I’m out there playing. I’m out there for my teammates trying to win basketball games,” he said.

The guard reflected on the team’s search for identity amid lineup changes. “We’re really trying to just find ourselves… a lot of different lineups,” Garland explained. “It’s still no excuse. The guys out there are more than capable of winning basketball games.”

On the importance of supporting teammates, Garland highlighted leadership and energy. “I love being out there with my teammates enjoying their success. Even from the fans… the bench has to be into it,” he said, praising Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant for energizing the team from the sideline.

Garland also discussed the small-ball lineup, especially with Evan Mobley out. “Dean means a lot to this team. Just him switching one through five… he can shoot the heck out of the ball, which spaces the floor for a lot of driving angles for all of us,” he said, emphasizing Dean Wade’s versatility and impact.

Cleveland erased a 17-point third-quarter deficit to force overtime but went scoreless in the extra period, allowing Charlotte to pull away. Garland led the Cavaliers with 26 points and nine assists, while Donovan Mitchell scored 17 points on 6-of-24 shooting. Injuries to Mobley and inconsistent lineups have contributed to the team losing six of its last nine games.

The Hornets were led by rookie Kon Knueppel’s 29 points, Brandon Miller’s 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Miles Bridges’ 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cleveland will attempt to regroup in Chicago on Wednesday as they aim to reestablish offensive rhythm.
