Nikola Mirotic detailed the turning point that led him away from a guaranteed offer from the Utah Jazz and back to Europe, describing the moment he walked away from an NBA contract and committed to FC Barcelona.

He shared the story while reflecting on his career path, noting that the choice came at a moment when he had both a major NBA opportunity and a strong desire for a different role.

Mirotic said that his family encouraged him to continue in the league after receiving a three-year guaranteed proposal from Utah.

“My parents, my some closest friends, they all wanted me to be in NBA, to take that deal,” Mirotic told Eurohoops, via HoopsHype.

He explained that the Jazz had already arranged his travel to Los Angeles, where he was expected to meet with team officials and finalize the agreement.

“I have a amazing offer by Utah Jazz for 3 years guaranteed deal,” he said.

At the time, he was on vacation in Halkidiki with his family and considering both his playing situation and the lifestyle he wanted for his young children.

“Our second son was just born and we kind of miss this European lifestyle of being closer to those family,” Mirotic said.

He also made it clear that he wanted a larger role than what he projected for himself in Utah, even with guaranteed money on the table.

“I wanted biggest role honestly as well. As a player, for me, it wasn’t just about money at the moment,” he said.

Mirotic described arriving at the airport with a ticket in hand and making the decision not to board the flight.

“So I came back from the airport,” he said, noting that he returned to his vacation instead of traveling to Los Angeles.

Within days, he finalized his deal with FC Barcelona, beginning a four-year run that included EuroLeague MVP-level seasons and multiple deep postseason appearances.

His time in Barcelona returned him to the spotlight in Europe, where he delivered some of the best statistical seasons of his career, including 19.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, and a 22.5 performance index rating in 2019–20.

Across his EuroLeague career, he has averaged 14.7 points on 51.5 percent shooting with 40.0 percent from three, production that established him as one of the most effective forwards of his era.

Before returning to Europe, Mirotic played five seasons in the NBA, averaging 12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 35.9 percent from deep across 319 regular-season games.

His peak NBA stretch came in 2017–18, when he averaged 16.8 points with Chicago and 14.6 points with New Orleans while helping the Pelicans reach the second round of the playoffs.

After his Barcelona stint, Mirotic joined Olimpia Milano and later moved to AS Monaco, where he continues to play a central role during the 2025–26 season while averaging 10.7 points in EuroLeague play.
