Jaylen Brown delivered a blunt assessment of the Boston Celtics’ 113-105 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Friday, expressing frustration with his team’s approach and energy throughout the night.
Speaking after the defeat at TD Garden, Brown repeatedly stressed that Boston lacked urgency from the opening minutes. “If you come ready to play or don’t come at all, that’s my whole team. We got to come ready to play,” he said, emphasizing that the Celtics “just went through the motions.”
Brown, who finished with 26 points in 32 minutes before foul trouble limited his availability, said the issues began early and continued through key stretches. “It was the majority of the game… definitely to close the half and then the end of that third quarter,” he said.
Boston surrendered a 40-point second quarter that shifted momentum decisively toward Brooklyn. Brown acknowledged that the Celtics struggled to match the Nets’ aggressiveness, saying, “Overall as a group we just lacked energy… just a lackluster game from the Celtics.”
The Nets broke a nine-game losing streak to Boston behind Nic Claxton’s first career triple-double of 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. Michael Porter Jr. added 33 points, while Noah Clowney scored 19 to help Brooklyn improve to 3-12 and earn its first NBA Cup win.
Brown pointed to defensive lapses as the central problem, though he said the team will need to review the film to fully understand the breakdowns. “I’m not sure what happened tonight,” he said when asked about the defensive performance. “We got to look at the film… but overall we didn’t find enough stops.”
He also referenced Boston’s inability to generate consistent ball pressure, despite productive minutes from Hugo Gonzalez and Jordan Walsh. “Those guys did a good job… but overall we just lacked energy,” he said.
Brooklyn capitalized on Boston’s mistakes, starting with the 17-4 run late in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 92-77. The Celtics never regained rhythm despite a strong effort from Neemias Queta, who added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Brown, who picked up his fifth foul with nearly six minutes left in the third, said it was difficult to maintain focus with what he called a “tough whistle,” though he added, “Some of them I could be better on for sure.”
Looking ahead, Brown stressed that the Celtics’ margin for error is smaller than in past seasons. “We need to play with an edge defensively and offensively. We got to be the harder playing team. That can’t be negotiable,” he said. “Brooklyn was a harder playing team. They played with more of an edge and they deserved to win tonight.”
Boston falls to 8-8 and 1-2 in NBA Cup play and will host Orlando on Sunday. Brown said the upcoming slate offers another test but made clear that the team’s mindset must shift immediately. “At the end of the day, we all got a job to do… come ready to play basketball or you’re doing a disservice.”
