The Indiana Pacers’ backcourt continued to take hits on Saturday as two more guards went down with injuries in what has become a devastating stretch for the team.
Bennedict Mathurin exited the game early with soreness in his right foot, and rookie two-way guard Taelon Peter also left the game after suffering a groin injury.
After the game, Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle provided an update on Mathurin’s condition, explaining that the team plans to have his foot examined further.
“It’s Benn’s forefoot,” Carlisle said. “They’re gonna see how he is and whether he needs to get imaging done when we got to probably Dallas. I don’t know if there’s any MRI places open tomorrow, but we seem to find them wherever we are.”
The injuries add to an already grim situation for Indiana’s depleted backcourt. The Pacers are without their top three point guards – Tyrese Haliburton, T.J. McConnell, and Andrew Nembhard.
Haliburton is sidelined for the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon, McConnell is expected to miss several more weeks with a strained hamstring, and Nembhard is out through the weekend after suffering a sore shoulder in the team’s season opener.
With so many players unavailable, the Pacers are facing serious depth challenges and may need to call up reinforcements from their G League affiliate or explore short-term signings to stabilize their rotation heading into a tough road trip.
