Deandre Ayton addressed the media during the 2025 Los Angeles Lakers Media Day, reflecting on his new role with the team. “I’m truly excited to be here. Everything counts, and you could feel the pressure through the door,” he said.
Ayton emphasized the importance of playing alongside elite teammates like Luka Doncic and LeBron James. “Playing alongside Luka is going to make a lot of things easier,” he said, noting his experience with playmakers has allowed him to dominate in pick-and-roll situations.
When asked about handling pressure, Ayton stated, “Pressure is a privilege. I’m in the right place to be where everything counts, and the fans want us to win.” He expressed his focus on contributing to the Lakers’ championship legacy.
The center highlighted the coaching approach of JJ Redick, describing him as “very straightforward” and focused on preparation. Ayton said he values clear expectations and team accountability as the Lakers enter training camp.
Defensively, Ayton noted growth in his understanding of the game. “Now, all pressure is on me, and I’m a little older.” He emphasized that experience has improved his consistency as a rim protector.
Ayton described joining the Lakers as a career-defining opportunity. “It’s intentional, and you kind of get to choose your own adventure from this point forward,” he said, adding that the environment motivates him to embrace the challenge fully.
Consistency and preparation were key themes for Ayton. “Just being consistent and sharpening my tools, sharpening my game, getting ready for whatever role they want me to play,” he said. Whether scoring, rebounding, or protecting the rim, Ayton stressed readiness for any role.
Reflecting on playing alongside LeBron, Ayton said, “Growing up watching him, I always thought of him as a leader. Now that I’m his teammate, it’s surreal.” He highlighted the opportunity to learn from both LeBron and Luka while contributing to the team’s goals.
Ayton also addressed his reputation in the league. “It’s the biggest opportunity I can say of my career. Some people say it’s my last leg, some say it’s my last chance. I’m truly not going to take it for granted,” he said. He emphasized that being in Los Angeles gives him a platform to prove his value on a big stage.
