A new documentary is set to shed light on one of the most unique stories in basketball history. The Lost Dream Team, directed by Jure Pavlović, premieres this week across the former Yugoslav countries, coinciding with the conclusion of EuroBasket 2025.
The film explores how the Yugoslav national team captured the gold medal at the 1991 European Championship in Rome, only to see their nation dissolve days before they stood on the podium.
Through never-before-shared testimonies, the project revisits the extraordinary triumph that unfolded under the shadow of political upheaval. What was meant to be a crowning achievement became a bittersweet farewell to a country that no longer existed.
The roster of stars featured in the film includes Toni Kukoč, Dino Rađa, Vlade Divac, Žarko Paspalj, Velimir Perasović, Jurij Zdovc, Aleksandar Đorđević, and Predrag Danilović. Each provides a first-hand account of what it meant to wear the jersey of a nation coming apart in real time.
Former head coach Dušan Ivković and other members of the staff also offer reflections, piecing together the emotions behind one of international basketball’s most symbolic championships.
Pavlović’s film captures the tension between sport and politics, highlighting how these athletes were forced to reconcile personal glory with the collapse of their homeland. Archival footage is paired with intimate interviews, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at an era marked by both brilliance and uncertainty.
For many players, that 1991 gold was more than a medal—it was the last moment of unity before a generation of talent scattered across different national teams in the years that followed.
