Former NBA guard Chris Childs recently shared his vivid memories of an altercation with Kobe Bryant during his playing days. Childs described the moment as one where he stood his ground despite the height difference, emphasizing he never intended to cause serious harm.
Childs recalled stepping up to Bryant during the confrontation, placing his forehead against Kobe’s chin before exchanging contact. “I could’ve really put a hurt on him, but I just wanted to let him know: ‘Look, young fella — I’m not the one to mess with,’” Childs said on Saving the Association, via HoopsHype.
The incident drew the attention of NBA commissioner David Stern, who personally addressed Childs. According to Childs, Stern remarked, “I never thought you would get into a fight — let alone with Kobe.” The commissioner then offered a conditional resolution: if Childs avoided further altercations, he would receive 80% of his money back, with 20% going to charity.
Childs noted the frustration surrounding league discipline, pointing out that the media and public largely focused on the fight rather than earlier penalties he received. He recounted being fined $250,000 and suspended for two games with minimal discussion or support.
The former guard also referenced referees Tim Donaghy and Monty McCutchen, both of whom had experience with Childs in the CBA. Childs said Monty’s nonverbal acknowledgment helped him approach the confrontation with composure.
Reflecting on the event, Childs emphasized the balance between asserting himself and avoiding unnecessary harm.
