Carmelo Anthony officially entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with an emotional enshrinement speech that reflected on his journey from Brooklyn to basketball immortality.
Anthony opened by acknowledging the obstacles he faced growing up in Red Hook, saying he carried “the echoes of every voice that ever told me I couldn’t.” He spoke about resilience, grit, and rewriting his own path.
He paid tribute to his late father, Carmeloate Vodique, calling him “a poet, an activist, a fighter” whose spirit guided him. Anthony said the Hall of Fame jacket was not just for him but also for his father.
The 10-time NBA All-Star also honored his sister Michelle Anthony for her unwavering support, describing her as his anchor through difficult times. He credited her with believing in him before he believed in himself.
Anthony delivered an emotional message to Puerto Rico, emphasizing his heritage and the pride he carried when representing the island on the international stage. “This Hall of Fame moment belongs to the island,” he said.
He thanked close friends, teammates, and the fans who supported him during his two-decade NBA career. Anthony specifically mentioned his bond with the Denver Nuggets, the team that drafted him in 2003, and his deep connection with the New York Knicks, calling Madison Square Garden “the mecca of basketball.”
Addressing critics who pointed to his lack of an NBA championship, Anthony responded by highlighting consistency, passion, and perseverance. “Legacy isn’t always made in championships,” he said, adding that his determination to keep playing through challenges defined his career.
Anthony expressed gratitude to the women in his life, from his mother to single mothers and grandmothers everywhere, saying their strength shaped his journey. He also credited his children for grounding him and inspiring him to rise above ego and criticism.
Reflecting on his lone college season at Syracuse, Anthony thanked the program for giving him a national stage. He called winning the 2003 NCAA title the spark that changed everything.
Over 19 NBA seasons, Anthony averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists across 1,260 games. He won the 2013 NBA scoring title, earned six All-NBA selections, and was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.
