The Dallas Mavericks have secured another key piece of their core, reaching an agreement with forward P.J. Washington on a four-year, $90 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal will keep Washington in Dallas through the 2029/30 season.
Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the extension will begin with a $19.8 million salary in the first year, the maximum allowed 140% increase from his current $14.2 million salary.
Spotrac’s Keith Smith notes the total value comes out to about $88.8 million. Once signed, Washington will be ineligible to be traded during the upcoming season.
This move is part of a broader effort by the Mavericks to secure their veteran contributors. Earlier this offseason, Dallas also finalized three-year extensions with Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford.
Acquired from Charlotte at the February 2024 trade deadline, Washington played a pivotal role in Dallas’ run to the NBA Finals, starting all 22 playoff games.
Last season, the 27-year-old posted averages of 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals, while shooting 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from deep in 57 appearances.
Over his five-year career, spanning 390 regular-season games, Washington has averaged 13.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in 30.6 minutes per contest, cementing his reputation as a reliable two-way forward who can stretch the floor and defend multiple positions.
