On the eve of EuroBasket 2025, even Tornike “Toko” Shengelia himself couldn’t give a straight answer about whether he would take the floor in Georgia’s opening clash against Spain. The question hung in the air: would the captain be there not just in spirit, but in action?
Just days earlier, both the Georgian Basketball Federation and his club Barcelona had released a sobering update. Shengelia had been diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia, undergone medical tests in Barcelona, and only then been cleared to rejoin his teammates.
The news brought relief, but uncertainty remained. Being back with the squad was one thing. Putting his body through the intensity of a EuroBasket game was another matter entirely.
And yet, when it counted, the leader answered. Shengelia suited up, logged 20 minutes, and contributed 13 vital points in Georgia’s historic 83-69 victory over reigning champions Spain.
His mere presence shifted the mood of the locker room; his impact on the court reminded everyone why he remains the emotional heartbeat of Georgian basketball.
For head coach Aleksandar Džikić, the decision to let his captain play wasn’t straightforward. He revealed with a smile at the postgame press conference just how hard it had been to keep Shengelia in check.
“No, no, no. I will not mention names; two of my guys had the duty to hold him on the bench because that’s who he is. He will hate me now, but my job is not to allow him that.”
Shengelia, for his part, couldn’t hide his grin. The medical scare had not dulled his hunger to fight for his country. As he had said before, nothing would stop him from giving everything to the national team.
His teammates drew energy from his determination. Sandro Mamukelashvili, who revealed that he too was battling through injury, explained just what Toko’s return meant to the group: “He’s a cold-hearted killer, so he’s an amazing leader.”
But it wasn’t just the points or the leadership in the huddle. Mamukelashvili described the spark that Shengelia brings just by being around.
“Just like him coming to Cyprus, seeing us already gave us a lot of energy. He comes in, plays the right way, makes the right reads, you know, it’s unselfish. So him deciding to play meant so much to us, and we knew that with him we’re going to be a lot more stronger.”
For Georgia, the win over Spain will be remembered as a turning point. But behind the box score, it was also the story of a captain who defied doubt, inspired his teammates, and reminded everyone what it means to lead – not just by words, but by example.
