After a career as a player, it is never a surprise to pursue coaching, especially for point guards as the floor general on the hardcourt.
San Antonio Spurs legend Tony Parker recently showed interest in becoming an NBA coach in his long-term plan.
In speaking with a French outlet, L’Equipe, he said he was ready for another career in coaching in the league.
“My dream is to coach in the NBA,” Parker told French news outlet L’Equipe in an Aug. 21 report. After retiring in 2019, Parker has undertaken several efforts, including co-owning a wine vineyard, racehorse training, and more.”
Steve Kerr, who is currently the head coach of the Golden State Warriors, was also a former point guard for the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls. Kerr had five titles, three with the Bulls and two with the Spurs, while Parker had four. They were both under Greg Popovich after retirement.
Both former Spurs guards might be highly influenced by their head tactician, Popovich, who has a legendary coaching career in the NBA, as he also earned five titles, including those of these players over the years, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014.
When Parker retired, he worked with the French National Team, starting with his coaching stint experience.
Meanwhile, Kerr joined the Phoenix Suns’ front office as a minority owner and became the team’s president of basketball operations and manager years later. In 2010, he left the franchise as he became a TV analyst and color commentator for TNT until 2014, when the Warriors hired him as head coach.
A much-awaited sequence of what is next for Parker, as he was building his resume in the international competition, but also has the vast potential to take over some necessary positions, such as the front office or coaching staff in the league.
With almost similar roots as a player as Kerr has already proven his capabilities, Parker is not far from achieving those.
The four-time champion finished his career with the Charlotte Hornets, as he ended with 15.5 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.7 rebounds.
