The San Antonio Spurs have named Jacob Chance the new head coach of their G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.
NBA insider Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that league sources confirmed the hire. Chance most recently worked as an assistant coach for the Australian Men’s National Team and Melbourne United of the NBL. He also served as acting head coach for the Boomers during international competition.
This marks a key development for San Antonio as the organization continues restructuring after Gregg Popovich’s departure in May. Popovich stepped down following 29 seasons, leaving Mitch Johnson as the new head coach of the NBA club.
The Austin Spurs position plays an important role in San Antonio’s development pipeline. The G League affiliate has historically produced rotation players who transition into the NBA roster. With multiple young prospects including Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, and Stephon Castle, the Spurs will lean heavily on Austin to refine talent.
Chance brings extensive player development experience from both international and professional leagues. His work with Australia’s national team highlighted his ability to manage high-level talent in competitive settings.
The Spurs enter the 2025–26 season with a blend of veterans like De’Aaron Fox, Harrison Barnes, and Kelly Olynyk alongside emerging stars Victor Wembanyama, Castle, and Harper. Establishing continuity between Austin and San Antonio will be critical as the team shapes its long-term identity under Johnson.
