Rylan Stiles of Sports Illustrated advises Thunder fans not to let the presence of Kevin Durant overshadow their ring night celebration.
According to reports on Friday night, Durant will make his debut with the Houston Rockets on October 21, which coincides with Oklahoma City’s scheduled celebration honoring the Thunder for winning the city’s first-ever NBA championship.
Durant’s relationship with the Oklahoma City fanbase is complex and layered. He was widely regarded as the franchise’s first true star after the team relocated from Seattle in 2008 and played a pivotal role in leading the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012.
However, the bond between Durant and the fans fractured when he departed as a free agent to join the Golden State Warriors in 2016. Since then, his visits to Oklahoma City have often been met with loud boos and mixed emotions from the crowd.
Despite the history, Stiles urges fans to set aside their grievances for one night to fully enjoy the celebration, which includes the presentation of championship rings and the raising of the new title banner.
While he doesn’t expect the fans to forgive Durant, Stiles emphasizes that the night should be about honoring the achievements of current MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates, who managed to deliver a championship to the franchise – a feat Durant himself never accomplished while with the Thunder.
