Despite recently securing Luka Doncic with a lucrative maximum-salary contract extension, the Los Angeles Lakers are strategically positioned to open up substantial cap space by the 2027 offseason.
This timing is crucial as several superstar players are expected to become free agents during that period, presenting the Lakers with a prime opportunity to pursue high-impact signings, according to Yossi Gozlan of The Third Apron.
On Saturday, Doncic committed to a three-year maximum extension worth up to $165 million. Although, as a Dallas Maverick, he was eligible for a more lucrative five-year super-max deal valued at approximately $335.9 million, his trade to Los Angeles nullified that option.
Instead, Doncic’s shorter-term contract not only benefits the Lakers’ salary cap management but also positions him to potentially enter free agency in 2028.
By then, with a decade of NBA experience, he would be eligible for a new maximum contract valued at 35% of the league’s salary cap – an increase from the current 30% threshold.
Gozlan further highlights that the Lakers might enjoy notable salary cap flexibility even in the 2026 season.
This is despite the likelihood of giving star guard Austin Reaves a significant salary increase in the upcoming offseason and the possibility that Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart will opt into their player options for the 2026-27 season.
Even with those financial commitments, the Lakers are projected to maintain approximately $30 million in available cap space.
However, the real strategic focus for the Lakers lies in 2027. While no superstar players are anticipated to hit free agency next summer, the following year could be transformative.
That offseason is expected to feature marquee free agents such as Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, both of whom are likely to command maximum annual salaries in the ballpark of $60 million.
This scenario positions the Lakers to leverage their cap space to pursue these elite talents, potentially reshaping their roster and championship aspirations.
