Jonathan Kuminga has traveled back to his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo this week. Still, sources indicate he is unlikely to participate in the upcoming 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament, which tips off on August 12. This report comes via Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
The versatile forward’s absence from the international event appears to be linked more to his uncertain NBA status than to injury or other personal reasons.
The 22-year-old player is currently embroiled in a contract impasse with the Golden State Warriors, the team that drafted him seventh overall in 2021.
As a restricted free agent, Kuminga has reportedly turned down a two-year, $45 million extension offered by the Warriors.
The core issues stalling the agreement include Golden State’s insistence on maintaining a team option for the second year, as well as their demand that Kuminga waive his right to veto trades during the first year of the deal.
This clause would strip him of certain leverage typically afforded under the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement.
Meanwhile, the Sacramento Kings have emerged as a serious suitor, engaging the Warriors in trade negotiations for Kuminga. However, the talks have hit a snag over the level of draft protection Sacramento wants attached to the picks involved in a potential deal.
In a show of commitment, the Kings have reportedly put a three-year, $63 million offer on the table for Kuminga in restricted free agency – significantly more in both years and guaranteed money than Golden State’s proposal.
Elsewhere around the league, multiple players appear to be waiting in the wings pending a resolution to the Golden State’s rising talent situation.
Veteran big man Al Horford, defensive specialist De’Anthony Melton, and Warriors fan favorite Gary Payton II are all expected to finalize deals with Golden State once the front office clarifies its direction with Kuminga.
With the FIBA AfroBasket tournament just around the corner and his NBA future in limbo, the player’s focus appears firmly on securing his next contract and long-term fit – whether that’s in the Bay Area or elsewhere.
