The Portland Trail Blazers have officially hired James Posey as an assistant coach on head coach Chauncey Billups’ staff, the team announced in a press release.
Posey, a two-time NBA champion during his playing career, brings a wealth of experience both on and off the court. Most recently, he was part of the Phoenix Suns’ coaching staff.
Since retiring as a player in 2011, Posey has steadily built a strong coaching résumé, beginning with Cleveland’s G League affiliate during the 2013–14 season.
He was then promoted to the NBA ranks as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2014 to 2019, playing a role on the coaching staff that won the 2016 NBA title.
After his stint with the Cavaliers, Posey continued to diversify his coaching experience.
In the 2021–22 season, he served as an assistant coach for the University of Virginia’s women’s basketball program, working under head coach Tina Thompson – who currently works as a scout for the Trail Blazers.
He returned to the NBA as an assistant with the Washington Wizards from 2022 to 2024, before briefly joining the Suns prior to his move to Portland.
Notably, Posey shares a personal connection with Chauncey Billups – they were teammates during the 1999–2000 NBA season with the Denver Nuggets.
He now becomes part of a growing and diverse coaching staff in Portland that includes Nate Bjorkgren, Tiago Splitter, Patrick St. Andrews, Quinton Crawford, and Ronnie Burrell.
Posey’s addition brings championship pedigree, defensive-minded coaching, and over a decade of professional coaching experience to a young Blazers team still building under Billups’ leadership.
