Former NBA veteran Joe Smith shared a memorable Kobe Bryant moment that captures the late superstar’s mindset on defense.
Smith recalled a Lakers practice before their playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks. When asked about defensive schemes, Kobe simply said, “Naw, we just go out there and play! I am the defense!”

About LeBron James, Smith said he reminds him of Magic Johnson, praising LeBron’s court vision and ability to elevate teammates. “He’s my favorite player to watch today,” Smith added.
Smith also compared current players to his former teammates. He noted that Brook Lopez’s style reflects the evolution of Zydrunas Ilgauskas, while Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell evoke the dynamic of Allen Iverson and Larry Hughes.
On the topic of rising stars, Smith praised Victor Wembanyama’s unique skill set. “Wemby’s size gives him the edge,” Smith said. “He’s more offensively refined than KG was as a rookie… but that just shows how the game’s changed.”
