Kawhi Leonard’s Los Angeles Clippers took control in Game 3 of their first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, securing a 117-83 victory. The win gave the Clippers a 2-1 lead, showcasing their well-rounded performance, highlighted by Leonard’s all-around game of 21 points and 11 rebounds.
The victory came after two nail-biting games in Denver, but Thursday night at the Intuit Dome was different. The Clippers shot 18 three-pointers, a key factor in their blowout victory.
Leonard, when asked about the team’s dominance, credited their shooting and defense, saying, “Just making shots. We made 18 threes tonight… we were able to outrebound them as well, limit their second-chance points.”
James Harden and Norman Powell added 20 points each, and the bench outscored the Nuggets’ reserves 31-6. The Clippers controlled the boards, securing 48 rebounds compared to Denver’s 38. Meanwhile, Denver’s offense struggled, shooting just 26.9% from three-point range.
When discussing the team’s success, Leonard also praised his teammates for their consistent performances. “Norm averaged 20 points, double-doubles all year,” Leonard remarked. “As long as we stay consistent, we share the ball, and everybody contributes, we have a good chance to win.”
On his own performance, Leonard attributed his high-level play to maintaining his body and staying in shape. “Focusing in on my body… combining that with lifting and a focused mindset, that’s what keeps me at this level,” he said. This is a crucial element as the Clippers aim for a deep playoff run.
Defensively, the Clippers have been exceptional, and Leonard acknowledged the chemistry on the floor. “It’s a collective effort,” he said. “Guys are looking the opponent in the eye and saying, ‘I want him.’ That mentality motivates me.”
As for Game 4, Leonard emphasized the importance of staying focused. Despite the commanding win, he remains cautious about the task ahead. “Denver’s a great team. We have to stay focused, play together, and come out with the right mindset,” he added.
Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists, but it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Clippers’ surge. Jamal Murray also added 23 points, but Denver was outmatched in every aspect of the game.
With Game 4 scheduled for Saturday, the Clippers will look to build on this momentum in front of their passionate fans. Leonard’s leadership and the team’s collective effort will be key in their pursuit of a series win.
