Donovan Clingan began to emerge as a significant contributor for the Portland Trail Blazers after starting center Deandre Ayton was sidelined with a season-ending calf injury in early February, according to Aaron Fentress of The Oregonian.

With Ayton out, Clingan stepped into the starting role, which allowed him to earn more consistent playing time.

During the remainder of the season, the rookie responded to this newfound opportunity by posting impressive averages of 8.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game – a performance that showcased his potential and adaptability.

Ayton, reflecting on Clingan’s rise, expressed his appreciation for seeing the rookie take on a larger role.

“It was great to see DC out there get some good bump,” Ayton said, acknowledging how the increased playing time benefited Clingan’s development.

“Knowing that he’s a two-time national championship guy, I know he wasn’t used to coming off the bench. So, just having the half of the season, starting, you could definitely see the confidence build up. And you saw his body change a little bit, him getting into better shape.”

The transition from a backup role to a starter seemed to be a turning point for Clingan, as his confidence grew along with his physical development.
