Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd spoke to the media after his team’s 120-106 victory over the Sacramento Kings in the Western Conference Play-In Tournament. The win secured the Mavericks a spot in Friday’s win-or-go-home matchup against Memphis.
Kidd credited the team’s defense and fast pace for the impressive second-quarter surge that propelled them to victory. “Defense was key. We were able to limit them to one tough shot, and the pace we carried over from the first quarter was high,” said Kidd. “Exum and the others did a great job of pushing the ball after missed shots.”
In the second quarter, the Mavericks erupted for 44 points, fueled by Klay Thompson’s red-hot shooting. Thompson scored 16 of his 23 points during the quarter, knocking down four three-pointers. Kidd explained the team’s offensive success, noting, “The relationship between Klay and D’Live was great. Klay got into rhythm, and D’Live did a great job of playmaking.”
The Mavericks took advantage of Sacramento’s defensive struggles, especially defending the three-point line. “We didn’t rely solely on three-pointers, but we got downhill and created open shots. The guys stayed true to the game plan, and that’s why we succeeded,” Kidd added.
Anthony Davis was a key factor for Dallas, contributing 27 points and nine rebounds. Kidd praised Davis for his leadership, saying, “He’s been a winner at every level. His positivity and belief in his teammates were evident, and he was huge for us both offensively and defensively.”
Kidd also took a moment to highlight the performances of the Mavericks’ role players. Brandon Williams, returning from injury, contributed 17 points in just 18 minutes off the bench. Kidd appreciated Williams’ impact: “He texted me before the game saying he wasn’t going to miss it. His speed, playmaking, and scoring were critical for us tonight.”
With the win, Dallas advances to face Memphis on Friday, with the winner moving on to face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs. Kidd expressed confidence in his team, particularly with Thompson finding his rhythm and Davis healthy.
Meanwhile, the Kings’ season ends with another missed playoff berth. Despite DeMar DeRozan’s 33 points, Sacramento couldn’t recover from the Mavericks’ second-quarter explosion. Kidd reflected on the Kings’ challenges: “They’ve had a turbulent season, and they just couldn’t find the answers tonight.”
