Last August, the Utah Jazz secured Lauri Markkanen with a four-year, $220 million contract extension, reportedly with a mutual understanding that the team would soon shift its focus toward contention.

Over the past two seasons, the Jazz were competitive in the early months before prioritizing their draft position in the latter half. However, throughout the 2024-25 season, the team has struggled to compete consistently.

Recently, the NBA penalized the Jazz for sitting Markkanen despite his being physically able to play.

Due to the timing of his extension, Markkanen was ineligible for a trade this season, but he will once again be eligible during the offseason.

The 27-year-old forward, who turns 28 in May, is under contract through the 2028-29 season without any player or team options.

Markkanen has played 8 seasons for the Bulls, Jazz, and Cavaliers. He has averaged 18.2 points and 7.1 rebounds in 447 regular-season games.

He was selected to play in 1 All-Star game and has won 1 Most Improved Player award.
