The Dallas Mavericks explored multiple trade options before sending Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, including an inquiry that left the Minnesota Timberwolves shocked.
According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Dallas reached out to Minnesota to discuss a potential trade centered around Doncic and three-time All-Star Anthony Edwards. The proposal never gained traction, as the Timberwolves had no interest in moving their 23-year-old star.
“Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison reached out to the Timberwolves and asked if there was any chance they’d be willing to trade Edwards,” Amick wrote. “He was promptly told no. The Timberwolves, league sources say, were stunned that Dallas was contemplating parting ways with Doncic.”
The inquiry highlighted how serious the Mavericks were about making a major roster change before ultimately striking a deal with Los Angeles. On February 2, Dallas sent Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, a move that reshaped both franchises.
Since joining the Lakers, Doncic has averaged 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game. Los Angeles has gone 4-2 with him on the floor and 16-4 over its last 20 contests.
Meanwhile, Edwards continues to solidify himself as one of the NBA’s brightest young stars. The Timberwolves guard is averaging a career-high 27.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists while leading Minnesota’s push in the Western Conference playoff race.
Although Minnesota declined Dallas’ proposal, the revelation adds another layer to an already dramatic trade season. The idea of Doncic in a Timberwolves jersey was short-lived, but the fact that Dallas even considered trading its five-time All-NBA guard caught many by surprise.
