Miami Heat president Pat Riley had high praise for Carmelo Anthony, calling the former NBA star one of the greatest players of all time. Speaking with The New York Post, Riley reflected on Anthony’s impact and skill set throughout his 19-year career.
“He’s one of the great players, ever. Really,” Riley said. He emphasized Anthony’s scoring ability, size, and versatility, describing him as a “tough guard” who required special defensive attention every night.
Anthony, a 10-time All-Star, averaged 22.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in his career. He won the 2013 scoring title and earned multiple All-NBA selections, solidifying his status as one of the most prolific scorers of his era.
Riley also spoke about how Anthony’s game would translate in today’s positionless NBA. “He wasn’t just a small forward,” Riley explained. “He could play the two-guard, small forward, power forward. Today, he’d be playing the five.”
Anthony was a dominant force in Denver and later became the face of the Knicks, where he led the franchise to multiple playoff appearances. His international success includes three Olympic gold medals and one bronze, along with a FIBA World Championship bronze.
Despite his impressive résumé, Anthony has yet to be officially inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Riley believes that recognition should come soon. “He deserves it. I hope he makes it,” he said.
