Daniel Theis is making a major move from the NBA to the EuroLeague, leaving behind his recent stint with the New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder to join AS Monaco.
The 32-year-old German center, who has been in the NBA since 2017, will continue his professional basketball career in Europe, despite receiving multiple offers from both the NBA and EuroLeague teams.
According to Donatas Urbonas, Theis decided to join Monaco even after more lucrative opportunities were presented to him, signaling his preference for a fresh start in the EuroLeague.
This season, Theis averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game with the Pelicans before he was traded to the Thunder on February 5 alongside a 2031 second-round pick in exchange for cash considerations. Theis was waived by Oklahoma City just one day later.
Monaco, currently sitting fourth in the EuroLeague standings with a 16-10 record, has been a competitive team this season, despite a recent 5-5 stretch in their last 10 games.
For Theis, the decision marks the end of his NBA journey and the beginning of a new challenge in European basketball. AS Monaco’s strong position in the EuroLeague presents Theis with an opportunity to contribute to a team with championship aspirations.
