Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins has strongly rejected the notion that LeBron James was in the dark about the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic. Perkins, known for his candid commentary, pointed out that both James and Davis are represented by Rich Paul—meaning LeBron likely knew about the deal and gave it his approval.
The Los Angeles Lakers pulled off one of the biggest trades in recent memory, acquiring Luka Doncic from Dallas. In return, the Mavericks received Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. Additionally, the Utah Jazz facilitated the deal, gaining Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Mavericks initiated the trade talks with the Lakers. After internal discussions, Los Angeles decided Doncic, 25, could be their long-term cornerstone. The trade was finalized quickly after that.
Despite Charania’s report that James and Davis were blindsided, Perkins stands by his assertion that LeBron was involved.
Doncic, currently sidelined with a calf injury, is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists this season. His addition to the Lakers is expected to provide the team with a generational talent and bolster their chances in the Western Conference. The Lakers’ front office sees Doncic as the perfect complement to LeBron James as they look to secure future titles.
On the other side, Davis—averaging 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists—joins Dallas with the goal of pairing with Kyrie Irving to create an elite duo. The Mavericks view this as a move to contend immediately and strengthen their championship aspirations.
For the Lakers, the deal signals a shift in focus toward Doncic’s long-term future, with LeBron playing a significant role in both his integration and development. The Lakers, sitting fifth in the Western Conference at 28-19, will likely see a new dynamic with Doncic at the helm.
Meanwhile, Dallas, currently sitting eighth in the West with a 26-23 record, bolsters its defense and rebounding with Davis. His two-way presence is expected to complement their high-powered offense and give them the necessary balance for a deeper playoff run.
