Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is not involved in the efforts of his business partner, Maverick Carter, who advises a group of investors on an ambitious project to raise $5 billion.
This funding initiative aims to create a new global basketball league, one that could emerge as a direct competitor to the NBA.
Despite his lack of involvement in this venture, James has consistently voiced his long-term goal of owning an NBA franchise once he concludes his illustrious playing career.
As of now, James remains under contract with the NBA through the 2025–2026 season, allowing him to focus on his on-court achievements while considering future opportunities off the court.
The group of investors spearheading this potential league envisions a format that would include six men’s teams and six women’s teams, with games taking place in various locations worldwide.
This innovative approach would mirror the global reach and structure of Formula 1, emphasizing international competition and audience engagement.
If realized, this new league would represent the most significant challenge to the NBA’s dominance in professional basketball in over five decades. The last major rival to the NBA was the American Basketball Association (ABA) in the 1970s.
The ABA ultimately folded, with four of its teams being absorbed into the NBA, marking the end of an era of direct competition in the sport.
