Despite his request to be traded from the Miami Heat and a seven-game suspension, star forward Jimmy Butler is expected to remain with the team past the February 6 trade deadline, according to ESPN NBA Front Office insider Bobby Marks.
Marks shared his insight on SiriusXM NBA Radio, stating, “I think there is a strong likelihood Jimmy Butler is on the Heat roster past the Feb. 6 trade deadline and he picks up that $52 million player option.” He continued, “I think it would be more likely for him to opt into the contract then see where you stand as far as a trade standpoint.”
Butler’s future with the Heat has been a topic of speculation throughout the season, especially after he requested a trade earlier this year. However, Marks suggests both the team and Butler are in a position where they need each other. “Miami needs Butler, and Butler needs Miami,” Marks emphasized, hinting that the relationship between both sides remains crucial.
The 35-year-old star has been a key player for the Heat since joining the team in 2019, leading them to multiple deep playoff runs. Butler’s leadership and skillset have been integral to Miami’s success, making his potential departure a major storyline in the NBA this season.
While a trade remains a possibility, the timing may not be ideal for both Butler and the Heat. Opting into his $52 million player option would allow Butler to assess his future options more strategically after the trade deadline passes.
At this stage, it appears both parties are focusing on the immediate future, with the February 6 deadline looming. While Butler’s trade request was significant, the insider’s comments suggest that both he and the Heat may ultimately benefit from staying together through this season.
