After Landry Shamet dislocated his shoulder during the preseason, which disrupted his chances of making the New York Knicks’ opening-night roster, reports have suggested that the team is highly likely to re-sign him once he fully recovers.
Shamet’s injury created an opportunity for the Knicks to reassess their roster, but they still have a strong interest in bringing him back when he is healthy.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype has confirmed that this is indeed the case, and he has added more details to the reports.
According to Scotto, the Knicks are hopeful that Matt Ryan, who is currently on a non-guaranteed contract, will clear waivers and rejoin the team on a two-way deal once Shamet returns. This would allow Ryan to continue contributing to the team’s development while remaining in the NBA fold.
Although the Knicks do have an open 15-man roster spot, their hard cap restrictions prevent them from carrying both players on standard contracts.
As a result, if Shamet does re-sign with the team, Ryan would likely have to be waived to make room for Shamet’s return, as the team doesn’t have enough cap space to keep both players on guaranteed deals.
