Donte DiVincenzo’s early struggles with the Minnesota Timberwolves reached a breaking point Tuesday night when he was benched during the critical closing minutes of an overtime loss to the Houston Rockets, according to a report by Jenna Lemoncelli of The New York Post.
DiVincenzo, who was a pivotal contributor to the New York Knicks’ playoff run last season, has been unable to carve out a consistent role or deliver the same level of impact since being traded to Minnesota shortly before training camp.
The 26-year-old guard’s production has taken a significant hit. He’s currently averaging 9.2 points per game on 35.1% shooting from the field and 32.2% from three-point range – a stark decline from his more efficient numbers with the Knicks.
Beyond his shooting woes, his playing time has been erratic, reflecting his struggle to find rhythm or chemistry within the Timberwolves’ system.
Tuesday night’s benching was particularly telling, as the ex-Knicks sharpshooter was pulled midway through the third quarter and did not return, logging only 15 minutes of game time and contributing three points.
Adding to the turbulence, DiVincenzo has already found himself at the center of trade rumors, barely a month into the season. Such speculation often points to dissatisfaction on either side, yet the Timberwolves appear to be doubling down on their belief in him.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, writing in his latest Substack column, Minnesota has pursued the player for over a year and has no intention of fielding trade offers for him at this juncture. This suggests that the organization remains confident in his ability to adjust and become a vital piece of their roster.
The Timberwolves’ continued faith in DiVincenzo may stem from his potential to complement their core players once he settles into his role. His versatility, defensive tenacity, and track record as a dependable role player in high-stakes games likely motivated their persistent pursuit.
However, with the season progressing and the Timberwolves aiming to solidify themselves as a contender in a competitive Western Conference, the pressure is mounting for DiVincenzo to turn things around quickly.
For now, both the Villanova product and the Timberwolves appear to be navigating a critical adjustment period. While the team’s patience with him remains intact, his ability to regain his form and make a tangible impact could ultimately determine his future in Minnesota.
