Franz Wagner delivered a powerful performance with 32 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a decisive 114-89 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night.
The Magic, now 6-6, built a commanding lead in the first game of NBA Cup Group A play, showcasing a balanced offense despite missing key players Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr.
Wagner spearheaded Orlando’s offense with relentless scoring, especially during a critical 19-3 run in the second quarter. His efforts helped the Magic pull away after Charlotte’s early momentum, with Jalen Suggs adding 17 points and hitting his first seven shots, including three three-pointers.
LaMelo Ball kept the Hornets competitive in the opening quarter, scoring 16 of his 35 points, and remained Charlotte’s main contributor throughout.
Ball, fresh off a 38-point game in Philadelphia, contributed six rebounds and seven assists but found little support as the Hornets’ shooting cooled and turnovers mounted, especially in the second quarter.
Orlando’s bench played a significant role in widening the lead, outscoring Charlotte’s reserves 45-27. Moritz Wagner scored 18 points, hitting six free throws and boosting the Magic’s depth while their defense stifled Charlotte’s shooters.
Moussa Diabate provided a notable effort for Charlotte with 12 points and 15 rebounds, but his performance could not prevent the Hornets’ third straight loss.
The Magic’s defense was central to their win, forcing Charlotte into 22 turnovers and limiting their shooting to 40.5% from the field.
As Orlando capitalized on the Hornets’ offensive struggles, they built a lead as large as 25 points in the fourth quarter, marking their third consecutive home win by over 25 points.
Orlando will look to maintain their momentum as they continue NBA Cup play, hoping to solidify their standing in Group A. Meanwhile, Charlotte falls to 4-7 and will aim to regroup and reduce turnovers in their upcoming games.
