Jerrod Mustaf, former New York Knicks first-round pick, passed away at 55, as reported by the Baltimore Sun. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
Mustaf starred at Maryland, averaging 16.6 points per game from 1988 to 1990, and was drafted 17th overall by the Knicks in 1990. His NBA career included stints with the Knicks and Phoenix Suns, though he later played overseas.
In 1993, Mustaf was linked to the murder of his pregnant girlfriend, Althea Hayes, though he was never charged. His cousin, Lavonnie Wooten, was convicted of the crime, and Hayes’ family believed Mustaf was involved.
After a tumultuous period that included assault charges in 2001, Mustaf returned to Maryland and became a youth mentor in Baltimore, launching programs like “Pull ‘Em Up” to encourage positive values among young people.
