The Memphis Grizzlies delivered a cohesive performance, securing a 124-111 win over the Orlando Magic on Saturday night. With contributions across the roster, Memphis built a commanding 26-point halftime lead in their home opener.
Santi Aldama led the Grizzlies with 22 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the field, while reserve center Jay Huff added a career-high 18 points, making seven of his nine attempts. Ja Morant contributed a double-double in his first regular-season home game since January, recording 16 points and 10 assists.
Orlando’s Franz Wagner led his team with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Jalen Suggs posted 21 points and seven rebounds. Paolo Banchero scored 16 points but made just four of his 12 shots as the Magic struggled to find their rhythm, finishing the night shooting 43% from the field.
The Grizzlies maintained control throughout the game despite a strong third-quarter surge by the Magic. Orlando closed the gap briefly with a 21-point run in the third period, outscoring Memphis 35-21 in the quarter. However, the Grizzlies’ initial lead proved too substantial for the Magic to overcome.
Orlando’s frequent turnovers played a significant role in Memphis’s success. The Magic committed 19 turnovers, leading to 30 points for the Grizzlies, who capitalized on each mistake. The Grizzlies’ early defensive pressure fueled a 12-point run just before halftime, giving them a 69-43 advantage going into the break.
Morant’s playmaking was crucial in Memphis’s victory, keeping their offense fluid and creating scoring opportunities. He found success driving the lane and connecting with teammates, finishing with a game-high 10 assists.
Orlando came into the game with a strong defensive track record, holding opponents to an average of 99 points over their first two games. However, Memphis’s efficient shooting and Orlando’s turnover issues disrupted the Magic’s defensive control, forcing them to play from behind for most of the game.
The Grizzlies’ bench also played a critical role, with multiple players contributing key minutes and points. In addition to Huff’s career-high, Scotty Pippen Jr. provided 11 points and led the team with 12 assists off the bench, while Aldama not only led in scoring but also added seven rebounds and five assists.
