Landry Shamet is expected to remain with the New York Knicks as the team finalizes its roster for the 2024-25 NBA season. Shamet, a training camp invitee, has made a strong case to stay with the team.

The Knicks currently have 12 players on guaranteed contracts, and NBA rules require them to carry at least 14 into the regular season. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, Shamet is a likely candidate for one of the final two spots.

Shamet’s journey to New York has been eventful. In June 2023, he was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Washington Wizards in a deal that involved Chris Paul and Bradley Beal. Despite a solid season with Washington, where he averaged 7.1 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 15.8 minutes per game, Shamet was waived in July 2024.

In September, Shamet signed with the Knicks, hoping to carve out a role in the team’s rotation. So far, he has appeared in two preseason games for New York, scoring 6 and 16 points respectively. His shooting and experience could be assets for the Knicks, who are looking to improve their depth.

The Knicks are managing their roster carefully due to salary cap restrictions. Katz mentioned that the team is up against the hard cap, which limits their financial flexibility. While Shamet is expected to fill one spot, the other may go to a rookie on a minimum contract to help the team stay under the cap.

Shamet’s three-point shooting ability has been a key factor in his potential retention. Over his career, he has earned a reputation as a reliable shooter, which could be crucial for a Knicks team that struggled with perimeter shooting last season.
