Vincent Collet, the former head coach of the France national basketball team, is set to join the Cleveland Cavaliers as a consultant. This move marks Collet’s entry into the NBA after a successful tenure coaching the French squad.

Collet reunites with Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson, who served as an assistant under Collet during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their collaboration in Paris led the French team to a second consecutive silver medal, falling to the United States in the final. Collet’s leadership during the tournament earned him the title of Best Coach.

According to Yann Ohnona of L’Equipe, Collet’s integration into the Cavaliers’ organization is imminent. He will provide external consulting services to the franchise, contributing his extensive basketball knowledge and experience. Collet is expected to spend about a week each month in the United States, balancing this new role with his previous responsibilities as a special advisor to the French National Technical Direction.

During his impressive coaching career, Collet has secured eight medals across fourteen major tournaments. This track record includes two silver medals at the recent Olympics. His return to the NBA comes after expressing interest in an assistant coaching position or a role in the EuroLeague.

Collet’s previous experience with the Cavaliers dates back to 2007 when he participated in a Summer League. At that time, he developed a connection with the franchise that has now resurfaced.

Atkinson was impressed with Collet’s tactical expertise during their time together in Paris. He aims to leverage Collet’s knowledge to analyze Cavaliers games and introduce some FIBA strategies into the NBA framework.

In September, Collet stated his interest in exploring opportunities within the NBA. He emphasized the importance of finding a compelling role that aligns with his coaching philosophy. Now, with this new position, he has the chance to experience the NBA firsthand.

The Cavaliers have high hopes for the upcoming season, and Collet’s addition to the coaching staff is viewed as a significant step toward achieving their goals.
