The Golden State Warriors gave serious consideration to drafting Bronny James with the 52nd overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
The Warriors were intrigued by Bronny’s skill set and had him on their draft board. However, out of respect for LeBron James’ preference that his son join the Los Angeles Lakers, the Warriors ultimately passed on selecting James Jr., allowing him to fall to the Lakers at No. 55.
This decision also aligns with previous reports that the Warriors had explored the possibility of trading for LeBron ahead of the 2023 trade deadline, suggesting a broader interest in the James family beyond just Bronny.
As the draft’s second round unfolded, Rich Paul, Bronny’s agent, reportedly informed teams interested in picking him that Bronny would opt to play the 2024-25 season in Australia if drafted by a team other than the Lakers.
Despite the pre-draft drama, James Jr. now has a standard NBA contract with the Lakers.
His decision to play in the NBA rather than explore international options solidifies his future with the franchise, where he joins his father, LeBron, in what could become a unique father-son pairing on the court.
