The New York Knicks reportedly had Charlotte Hornets center Nick Richards on their radar this offseason.

According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, the Knicks explored the possibility of acquiring Richards as they sought to add depth at the center position.

Edwards shared that while Richards was a potential option, the Knicks faced challenges due to financial limitations and were cautious about making a move.

“I’m not sure I would do this deal if I were the Knicks,” Edwards wrote.

He explained that adding Richards would address a need for frontcourt depth, but it would require parting with key assets, including guard Miles McBride.

Edwards acknowledged that Richards could be a fit for New York, describing him as a “big, physical specimen” with the ability to protect the rim and rebound effectively.

The Knicks, however, were hesitant to move forward with any deal that could disrupt their current roster.

Richards, 26, is entering the second year of a three-year, $15 million contract with the Hornets.

Last season, the center averaged a career-high 9.7 points and 8 rebounds per game for Charlotte, starting in 52 of 67 games.

His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor made him an appealing target for teams like the Knicks, who were looking for an affordable addition to their rotation.

New York has been in the market for a backup center to provide depth behind Mitchell Robinson.

With limited cap space and a desire to avoid trading away significant pieces, the Knicks were in a tough spot when it came to exploring potential deals.

Edwards noted that the Knicks might ultimately decide to “sit tight” and trust in the players they already have on the roster.
