Former NBA center Spencer Hawes shared his memorable experience watching San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama live.
Hawes recounted attending a game last year where Wembanyama performed an impressive dunk.
“I remember last year, one of my best friends, Mitch Johnson, who coaches for the Spurs, was playing Portland,” Hawes said in an interview with Cyro Asseo de Choch of HoopsHype.
He added, “A bunch of us went down to see the game, and leading up to it, we were all excited, wondering about Victor Wembanyama.”
Hawes described the moment, saying, “When we got there, he did a couple of those insane moves, like that ‘go-go gadget’ Space Jam thing.”
The former NBA player noted, “His foot landed before he even dunked the ball. It was wild – something I’d never seen or even imagined before.”
He recalled turning to his friend and questioning, “I think he traveled there, but how do you even officiate something like that?”
Hawes was in awe, emphasizing, “It was just unreal. Sorry for the tangent, but yeah, it’s those moments where you realize how incredible it is to see certain players in person.”
During his rookie season with the Spurs, Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game.
His remarkable debut earned him the Rookie of the Year award, affirming his impact on the league.
