Matas Buzelis, once touted as a potential top pick in the NBA draft, now faces scrutiny over his draft prospects.

In a January mock draft by Jonathan Wassermann, Buzelis was pegged as the 7th overall pick, a far cry from his earlier projections.

An anonymous NBA executive drew comparisons between Buzelis and Franz Wagner, citing similarities in their potential trajectories. The German small forward is averaging 19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 32.7 minutes per game in his third year in the NBA.

“If he turns out great, he could be Franz Wagner at best,” the executive told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. “Buzelis is skilled but lacks some toughness and grit at times.”

Buzelis, known for choosing the G League path over college, is averaging 13.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 31.5 minutes per game for the G League Ignite.

As the NBA draft approaches, Buzelis finds himself in a pivotal position, aiming to dispel doubts surrounding his game and reclaiming his once-lofty draft status.
