Newcastle Eagles are one just one round away from reaching the BBL Cup Final for a fifth straight season after their 83-78 Quarter-Final win over Glasgow Rocks.

In a rematch of last season’s final, the Rocks came very close to inflicting the Eagles’ first defeat of the season.

The game saw the lead change hands throughout and it was only in the final minute when the Eagles were finally able to pull away for the win.

With the contest tied 78-78, Rahmon Fletcher came up with a steal and basket to put Newcastle up by two and after the Rocks came up short on subsequent possessions, the Eagles were able to seal victory from the free-throw line.

Joe Chapman led the Eagles with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, with Rocks’ Warren Gillis also posting a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

While the Eagles were booking their place in the next round of the BBL Cup, rivals Leicester Riders and Worcester Wolves were able to get a little closer to the league leaders in the BBL Championship.

The unbeaten Riders took their streak to six games with a 73-49 win at Plymouth Raiders. Dzaflo Larkai had a great shooting night for the Riders, missing just one of his nine shots and finishing as the team’s leading scorer on 16 points.

It was a much tougher game for Worcester Wolves as they came back from a thirteen-point deficit to win 90-87 at the improving Sheffield Sharks.

The Wolves trailed 51-38 at the break but hit back in the second half, taking the lead again inside the final quarter.

Perris Blackwell led the Wolves with a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds, while Ashton Khan chipped in with 20 points.

“In the first half we played zero defence, giving up 51 points,” said Wolves’ coach Paul James.

“In the second half, once we settled down and got a few consecutive stops, we started to play our game and that’s how we started to claw it back.

“Our new player, Josh Cameron, came in and had 20 in the second half, which also helped.”

James added, “I’m really delighted for our team as Sheffield’s always a tough place to come and play.

“I was pleased with how we fought back from going down big, to come away with what I think is a fantastic win.”

The weekend wasn’t a complete loss for Sheffield after their impressive 97-86 victory over Cheshire Phoenix on Friday.

The Sharks’ trio of TJ Robinson (28 points) Jerrold Brooks (25) and Mike Tuck (20) did the majority of the damage as the Sharks won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Finally, Manchester Giants ended their six-game losing streak with a 90-82 victory at London Lions.

Yorick Williams’ side had not won in the Championship since late September and looked to be heading towards another defeat in the first half.

But the Giants kept plugging away and were rewarded in the fourth quarter as they got going offensively, outscoring the hosts 34-18 in the final ten minutes.

Sam Attah was the top scorer for Giants with 17 points, while Kai Williams posted the same number for the Lions.
