In a significant move to expand its global footprint, the NBA is reportedly considering the establishment of a new league in Europe, operated in collaboration with FIBA, according to Kurt Badenhausen of Sportico.

Recent discussions between the NBA, FIBA, and EuroLeague stakeholders have explored innovative ways to foster the growth of basketball in Europe, leveraging the region’s burgeoning talent pool and fan base.

While details remain fluid, the proposed league would likely involve collaboration with FIBA, similar to the partnership established for the Basketball Africa League (BAL), which was launched in 2021.

Strategic investors with strong ties to the European market are expected to play a pivotal role in the development and execution of the proposed NBA Europe league.

The NBA’s ambitions in Europe extend beyond the establishment of a new league, with considerations for intercontinental competitions featuring elite teams from various regions.

With a record number of European players making significant contributions in the NBA, including marquee names like Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Doncic, the league sees an opportunity to elevate the sport’s profile in the region.

Currently, there are four continental competitions in Europe: EuroLeague, EuroCup, Basketball Champions League and FIBA Europe Cup. The first two are operated by EuroLeague Basketball and the latter two – by FIBA.

The talks are ongoing between EuroLeague and FIBA, who have been at odds for over two decades, on merging EuroCup and BCL in the near future.
