The 76ers’ loss in Game 6 against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night may have far-reaching consequences, according to ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith.
The 76ers lost 86-95, despite leading 3-2 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and being one win away from reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2001.
During the final four minutes of Game 6, the 76ers’ MVP Joel Embiid did not touch the ball, and the team struggled to score down the stretch. Smith believes the consequences of losing Game 6 could be significant, including the possible firing of head coach Doc Rivers and general manager Daryl Morey, and the departure of James Harden, who has a player option for next season.
“It could cost Doc Rivers his job. It could cost Daryl Morey, potentially, his job. James Harden might depart from Philadelphia. That’s what’s at stake here,” Smith said on ESPN’s First Take.
If the 76ers lose Game 7, which will be played in Boston, it could spell the end of the team’s championship aspirations and lead to major changes in the front office and on the court.
Despite their star-studded roster, the 76ers have failed to advance past the second round of the playoffs since 2001, and losing to the Celtics in this year’s playoffs would be a major setback.
