After not being able to sign a rookie scale extension with the Boston Celtics, Grant Williams can only move forward with further contemplation about his worth and impending future.
Speaking on a sit-down interview with Shams Charania of The Athletic, Williams gets real and admitted that he was disappointed on the fact that no extension was materialized between him and the franchise.
As such, Williams reiterated that he believes in his capabilities to prove and raise his value, as he is set to become a restricted free-agent next summer
“You know how much you’ve worked. You let your work show, and who knows? You might be able to get a better deal than you were in the contract negotiations in the first place,” Williams said. “For me, that’s the confidence that I have walking into it. You let your craft show where you are and where you will be in the future.”
The young big man didn’t deny that he has a chip in his shoulder upon currently approaching this 2022-23 season as his contract year.
“Yeah. There’s always going to be a chip on my shoulder, though. The chip on my shoulder has never gone away. … That’s how I approach every single day. It’s like, ‘If you doubted me, good for you.'”
After being drafted by the Cs in the late first round of the 2019 Draft, Williams blossomed from being a bench warmer into an important rotational piece. The improvement of his numbers throughout the years only demonstrates the progress he gives on a nightly basis.
Possessing a stuffed body, Williams is a significant muscle for Boston in terms of all-around situations. Not only that, he crafted his three-point shooting and is now a deadly knockdown sniper from distance.
Besides helping Boston to raise its 18th banner, Williams has a personal goal this new campaign to prove that he is worthy enough of a big pay day.
