Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas says he does understand Ben Simmons for the way he reacted to Doc Rivers doubting publicly whether the 76ers can win a championship with him running the point.

According to Arenas, putting Simmons on the spot was not the right thing to do by Philadelphia’s head coach. In response to the comments the 26-year-old point guard requested a trade and refused to play until he finally was traded to the Nets.

“I can understand where Ben Simmons is coming from. It wasn’t the media saying he can’t win, his own coach said ‘don’t know’ if the Sixers can win with him. Teammates know each other weaknesses they know Ben struggles with shooting and confidence issues. Putting him out there like that wasn’t right.”
