Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins has reportedly grown “increasingly frustrated” over his role with the team, according to Shams Charania.

Per Charania and The Athletic:

His shot attempts per game and usage rate have decreased in each of the past three seasons — even as the athletic, energetic Collins has improved his offensive repertoire. The 6-foot-9 big man has challenged the Hawks locker room on multiple occasions to play team basketball and commit to one another this season. Oftentimes, Collins has felt his voice go unheard.

As the quote indicates, Collins has been vocal about the team playing a better brand of team basketball.

“I’ve banged my head on the wall a couple of times trying to figure it out myself. There’s really no excuse,” Collins said of the Hawks’ defensive struggles after the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Jan. 7. “All I can say is it’s unacceptable and we have to dig down and do the things necessary to win or this is going to be the result every night.”

The 24-year-old, whose usage rate and scoring average (17.5 points per game) are the lowest since his rookie season in 2017-18, is eligible to be traded as of Jan. 15.

While Charania doesn’t state that Collins is a definite candidate to be traded by the Feb. 10 deadline, he also notes that the Hawks are a team to watch as a potential suitor for Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons.

However, the 76ers don’t appear to be any closer to dealing Simmons than they were at the beginning of the season and the situation still remains murky.

Collins signed a five-year, $125 million deal in restricted free agency last offseason.
