The Miami Heat’s pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo appears to have come down to one final sticking point: rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Miami spent much of the negotiation process attempting to complete a deal for Antetokounmpo without including Jakucionis. Fischer reported that the Heat viewed the former Illinois standout similarly to how the Boston Celtics valued Hugo Gonzalez in their own discussions with Milwaukee, describing Jakucionis as Miami’s “hang-up” in negotiations.

Fischer noted that Miami initially hoped a package centered around Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft would be enough to secure Antetokounmpo. The proposal already represented a significant offer, combining an All-Star caliber scorer in Herro, two recent first-round selections in Ware and Jaquez, and a lottery pick in one of the league’s most anticipated draft classes.

Ultimately, however, the Bucks insisted on acquiring Jakucionis as part of the transaction. ESPN’s Shams Charania later reported that the finalized deal sends Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Herro, Ware, Jaquez, Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap, and a 2033 second-round selection.

The inclusion of Jakucionis highlights how highly Miami valued the 20-year-old guard despite his limited rookie role. During the 2025-26 season, Jakucionis appeared in 53 games and made 12 starts while averaging 6.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 17.8 minutes per game. He shot 42.9% from the field and an impressive 42.3% from three-point range while posting an .879 free-throw percentage.

Those efficiency numbers helped establish Jakucionis as one of Miami’s more intriguing young developmental pieces. Although he averaged fewer than five field-goal attempts per game, his .567 effective field-goal percentage and strong perimeter shooting suggested long-term upside as a secondary playmaker and floor spacer.
