Thunder general manager Sam Presti pushed back against criticism directed at Chet Holmgren following the Spurs series, arguing that the 24-year-old does not require outside pressure to continue improving.
Calling Holmgren “one of our guys,” Presti praised the forward’s work ethic and self-motivation.
“This is a guy that is intrinsically motivated,” said Presti. “He doesn’t need people questioning him or things on the internet to drive his improvement.
“He doesn’t need somebody to nudge him, he doesn’t need somebody to question him. It’s just kind of how he’s wired. So I’m not really that concerned about him.”
The Thunder executive noted that Holmgren has spent much of his basketball career proving doubters wrong, dating back to his high school and college years.
For that reason, Presti expressed little concern about the recent criticism and remains confident Holmgren will continue to grow within Oklahoma City’s long-term plans.
Holmgren is set to begin a five-year, $239.2 million contract extension next season, joining fellow cornerstone Jalen Williams as a central part of the Thunder’s future.
