Jonas Valanciunas returned to the court Tuesday after missing 11 games and recorded 16 points and 16 rebounds in Denver’s 109-107 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
“Yeah, I missed some time… felt good just playing basketball, that’s what I’m happy to do,” Valanciunas said, reflecting on his first game back since a right calf strain.
Valanciunas emphasized the importance of rebounding for the team. “It’s my job… the last aspect of defense. We all did a pretty good job today… we boxed out, put extra effort in finishing defense,” he said.
Discussing Detroit’s style, he acknowledged the Pistons’ physicality. “Yes, they are very physical… into the ball, into the screener, always connected with defensive players. They played good basketball today,” Valanciunas added.
Valanciunas praised the younger players on the roster during his absence. “I’ve been amazed by young guys leaving out there, playing the right way… there is no ego… it’s beautiful to watch,” he said, highlighting their contributions despite injuries to key players.
He stressed the team’s mental approach. “We know what we need to do… we believe in ourselves… we’re humble for the wins,” Valanciunas said, noting the importance of sticking together after a narrow loss.
Addressing missed free throws late in the game, Valanciunas downplayed the situation. “He missed free throws… I missed easy bunny under the basket… it’s on all of us. When we win, we all win. When we lose, we all lose,” he said, referring to Jamal Murray’s late misses.
Valanciunas also commented on his availability and physical care. “Our job is to be available… take care of your body… get some rest, treatments, everything,” he said, underscoring the team’s focus on health amid a crowded schedule.
Looking ahead, he emphasized recovery and preparation. “Stick together, get some rest… we have back-to-back coming… be the best versions of ourselves,” Valanciunas said, preparing for Thursday’s matchup against the Nets at Ball Arena.
Despite the Nuggets’ strong effort, Detroit’s Tobias Harris and Cade Cunningham led a late surge, with Harris making two critical free throws in the final seconds to secure the victory.
