Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie highlighted his team’s defensive growth after Wednesday’s 112-101 win over the New York Knicks.

“I will give our defense a lot of credit. They are in a sweet spot as far as the standard that we expect… grabbing, making sure that we’re forcing reads,” Christie said. “They persevere through a lot of adversity and that says a lot about them individually and collectively.”

Christie noted the team’s ability to maintain focus despite the challenges of the season. “Winning three in a row for the first time this year shows that if they continue to play to the standard, they put themselves in games,” he said. “Once we are in games, then we really learn about ourselves as far as closing, target basketball, and taking advantage.”

Sacramento used strategic defensive matchups to disrupt New York’s offense. “Precious has shown himself to be a Swiss Army knife on the defensive end. He was pressuring Jalen Brunson, and KAT goes to set the pick and roll… Russ is in front of him. You switch small onto small and big onto big,” Christie explained.

Precious Achiuwa’s effort stood out both defensively and offensively. “He was locked in on the defensive end because he accepted the assignment on JB… He was aggressive downhill driving, getting to the basket, and grabbed 14 rebounds, six of them offensive,” Christie said.

Christie also praised the team’s growth in defensive discipline and communication. “The pickup point has been a little higher, teams are beginning to fill us opportunistically… guys are getting to the body, putting hands on people, and showing up in passing lanes,” he said.

The coach highlighted the mix of veteran leadership and young talent fueling Sacramento’s energy. “When I talk to Debo and Russ, they truly believe. The young guys come to shootarounds, get work in screening angles and little details… it’s a bit of both and it’s a good mix,” Christie said.

Christie downplayed any extra emotion regarding Mike Brown’s return to Sacramento. “It’s all that, man. We come here to win, period. Doesn’t matter who’s over there. We are here to compete,” he said.

The Kings were led by DeMar DeRozan’s 27 points, moving him into 22nd on the NBA all-time scoring list, while Achiuwa contributed 20 points and 14 rebounds. Zach LaVine added 25 points, and Russell Westbrook posted 19 points and 11 assists.

Sacramento now owns consecutive wins over the Rockets, Lakers, and Knicks, a stretch against teams currently in playoff positions, as they prepare to host Washington on Friday.
