San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama admitted Oklahoma City “played a better basketball game than us” after Tuesday’s 119-98 defeat at Paycom Center. “I think we didn’t play like ourselves defensively,” he said, citing breakdowns in communication and spacing during the third quarter.
Wembanyama explained the team struggled to execute its game plan. “Specifically…early communication, being clear with our intentions, our placement…we didn’t respect the game plan,” he said, adding that the Thunder’s performance was consistent with their identity.
The young center addressed the hostile environment, noting that the crowd’s boos had no negative impact. “It didn’t feel like that…of course I hear the booing…but it was a good sport,” Wembanyama said.
He compared the atmosphere in Oklahoma City to European arenas he’s played in. “Panathinaikos…that’s the most hostile. Other places are loud, but Panathinaikos is by far most impressive,” he said, adding that some French teams rely heavily on crowd energy to stay competitive.
Wembanyama acknowledged the physical nature of the game. “It was pretty physical…worse than coming in for sure. I think I’m going to be sore in a few places tomorrow,” he said, referencing multiple collisions and rough play during the matchup.
Despite the loss, he remained analytical about his individual performance. “I know you don’t care about milestones too much…but you record your five career block tonight…not great. I’ve been having a little less opportunities, but our defensive rating has still been pretty good,” Wembanyama said, noting that two of his potential blocks were called goal-tending.
He also praised the Thunder’s consistency and experience. “They trusted what they do…that’s a team that’s been deep in the playoffs. 40 games in is nothing for them,” Wembanyama said, underlining Oklahoma City’s ability to execute at a high level regardless of circumstances.
The Spurs trailed 55-52 at halftime but were outscored 40-24 in the third quarter as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander extended his streak to 111 consecutive games with at least 20 points. Jalen Williams added 20 points, while Chet Holmgren contributed eight points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks.
San Antonio falls to 27-13, dropping six of their last 10 games, while the Thunder improve to a league-best 34-7. The teams will meet again on February 4 in San Antonio.
